Find a coach who is right for you

How do you go about choosing an executive coach who will deliver what you want?  If you've never had a coach before, it can be quite difficult to know what the important factors are for you.

Vicki Macleod and the other executive coaches in our coaching network have each formed successful coaching relationships with a variety of people at senior levels. An important element in each successful relationship is the way in which the coach and client have gelled.

To enable good match-making, we suggest a simple process

  • think about what you want to get from the coaching
  • read what coaches say about themselves, and notice what that evokes in you
  • if you find a coach who looks promising, have an initial telephone conversation
  • if you then feel there is good potential, arrange a first coaching session

You can achieve a lot in terms of finding a suitable coach simply from reading through their profile. There may be some things that matter particularly for you, for example

  • business background and experience
  • the coach's approach to coaching (pragmatic, reflective, psychological, etc)
  • practicalities of location
  • preference for contact: primarily face to face, or primarily via telephone

Of course, it is not always easy to know exactly what you want to get from coaching, beyond your general aspirations. Coaches can be good at drawing that out from you, in the initial telephone conversion and subsequently.
