Why would an organisation use consultants?

In our experience, our clients have the following reasons for using impartial consultants whose values are compatible with their organisation:

     
Knowledge and experience Our client wants to know how to improve things.  They want objective views and best-practice experience -- more than they have available in-house -- about how to achieve changes, and how to avoid failure.  
   
Skills in delivering Our client has a clear idea of what they want to do.   They require consultants to bring experience of how to achieve things quickly, build skills in their team, and monitor the quality of the work as it progresses.  
   
Resource availability Our client has well-framed plans for what they want to do, but lacks sufficient immediately available resources, and employs consultants to help in managing and staffing their project.  
   
Internal politics Organisational change is particularly subject to internal politics.  In such circumstances organisations want an impartial external view to help achieve progress, and to avoid involving stakeholders in unnecessary conflict.
